Position Overview

We are seeking a pious, knowledgeable, compassionate and community-oriented Imam to provide spiritual leadership, religious guidance, pastoral care and educational programming.

The successful candidate should be able to connect effectively with a diverse congregation and demonstrate a strong commitment to engaging youth, families, converts and the wider community.

The successful candidate will normally share Imam duties with the existing Imam on a rota basis. The exact rota may vary according to the needs of the Masjid, including periods of annual leave, absence, Ramadan, Eid, community events or other operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Spiritual Leadership

  • Lead the five daily congregational prayers on allocated rota days.
  • Deliver Friday (Jumuʿah) khutbahs and lead Jumuʿah prayers when scheduled.
  • Lead Eid prayers and other congregational prayers as required.
  • Conduct Janazah prayers and provide appropriate pastoral support.

Islamic Education

  • Develop and deliver Islamic classes, Qur'anic studies and lectures.
  • Provide educational programmes for adults, youth, children and converts.
  • Support the development of engaging and relevant Islamic educational resources.

Pastoral Care

  • Provide spiritual counselling and religious guidance to members of the community.
  • Conduct Nikah services and provide matrimonial guidance.
  • Offer family guidance and support in accordance with Islamic principles.
  • Provide appropriate pastoral care during bereavement, illness and personal difficulty.

Community & Youth Engagement

  • Develop initiatives that actively engage elders and young people.
  • Address contemporary challenges facing Muslims, particularly youth.
  • Encourage participation, volunteering and positive community involvement.
  • Contribute to a welcoming, inclusive and cohesive Masjid environment.
  • Where appropriate, participate in interfaith and wider community engagement.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

A recognised ʿĀlimiyyah qualification, Bachelor's degree or higher qualification in Islamic Studies, Shariah, or an equivalent qualification from a recognised Islamic institution.

Qur'an

  • Memorisation of the complete Qur'an.
  • Excellent Tajweed and recitation.

Islamic Knowledge

Strong knowledge of Qur'an, Hadith, Fiqh, Aqeedah, Seerah and other relevant Islamic sciences.

Languages

  • Fluency in English and Arabic, spoken and written.
  • Fluency in Urdu is also required.

Communication

  • Excellent interpersonal and public-speaking skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people of different ages and backgrounds.

Experience

Previous experience serving as an Imam, teacher, Khatib or community leader is highly desirable.

Legal Status

Must be legally authorised to work in the United Kingdom.

Background / Safeguarding

Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory DBS check and any other relevant safeguarding requirements.
